  Complaining is one of the most self destructive things we do to ourselves as human beings. It damages relationships, creates stress, and makes us miserable to be around.  The hallmark of people who are chronically negative is that they’re unhappy and it’s someone else’s fault.  They look around and point out everything that’s wrong with a smug sense of self righteousness. The problem for me is that I am susceptible to it. When I am around someone who is a complainer I find myself sinking into it all too easily and before I know it I’m as miserable as they are.  I don’t want to be miserable.  I want to be happy and enjoy my life as it is right now, so I've learned to minimize the time I spend with negative people. In The Beginning....

Late one evening last March a friend called. Janet asked me how things were going and when I told her things were fabulous her response was typical Janet, “Yes, but....” I kept telling her how well things were going and she kept digging for something that I was upset about. She finally dropped a gossip bomb that affected me directly. I lost my temper, my cool and as for feeling fabulous? I wasn’t. I tracked down the rumor and even though it wasn’t true my panties were in a twist and my precious peace was shot all to hell. Now, Janet wasn’t doing what we all do to some extent, bonding through negativity. She wanted to connect and find a way to be supportive. I had certainly done my share of that. But, for whatever reason, I had enough. I felt like I drowning in negativity and couldn’t take it anymore. How a Man Who Hated Me Taught Me Respect

SFC Legend hated me and I don’t blame him, but his hate and how he handled it taught me a valuable lesson about differences, respect, and common goals. When I joined the Army women were still a separate branch, The Woman’s Army Corp, which was in the process of being dissolved.  More fields were being opened up to women and I ended up being one of a small group of women to go through the Quartermaster School . When I finished my course I was asked to stay on as an instructor because I was a woman and I had a background in education. Makes sense right? Except that most of the instructors were typically experienced NCOs with several years of experience in the field. It’s easy to understand why some members of my team were less than thrilled when I joined them. It was an interesting time.
